Christmas Joy

In these dark days,
The shortest of the year,
Full of drizzle and cold,
Joy is just over the horizon,
Rushing toward us in unseen grace,
Eager to shock us into love.
Just a few more tasks to do —
A phone call, cookies to bake,
A few more gifts to wrap,
A quick trip out for underwear or food
For the latest mission —
But babies don’t wait till we’re ready,
The Christ Child least of all.
There it is — the sound of bells,
The angels singing,
Coming toward us —
There, on the horizon, a gathering glow
And then the sharp rays of light,
Like a star!
